India to purchase 59 Mi-17s from Russia

India plans to buy 59 Mil Mi-17 multi-purpose transport helicopters from Russia in the near future.

Reports by the Indian defense ministry say the decision has been approved by the acquisition committee and will be submitted to the security committee. 

The value of the future contract is not disclosed.The 80 Mil Mi-17 helicopters that India purchased from Russia earlier will go into service by the end of the year.

ITAR-TASS says Russian helicopters are highly popular in India. They are used for military and transportation purposes and in rescue operations.
