Police in North Ossetia have described an explosion on a central market in Vladikavkaz on Thursday morning as a terrorist act and have launched an inquiry.

More than eight people were killed by the explosion, and the number of wounded have yet to be specified.

Reports by the Russian Prosecutor-General’s investigating committee say the bomb was planted in a car parked by the entrance to the market.

Law enforcement workers suspect that another parked car may contain a bomb.

Several cars parked near the market are currently being inspected.

The explosion on the market left a crater 1.5 meters in diameter and about 70 centimeters deep.
