Major Russian networking site VKontankte shut down unrestricted registration on Thursday night, its press service said.

From now on, a user can create a profile on the site only through someone already registered, the site’s press service chief Vladislav Tsyplukhin said.

It is as yet unclear who will be empowered to hand out invitations to join VKontakte.
