After many months of fierce fighting with armed terrorists, Syrian government forces have regained control of the strategic city of al-Qusayr, cutting the rebels from support in arms and manpower that reached them from neighbouring Lebanon. Eighty-five years ago, on May 24, 1928, the Italia airship with a 16-member North Pole expedition led by Umberto Nobile reached the North Pole. On its way back, the airship was caught in a storm and crashed some 100 km off Spitsbergen. That happened on May 25. Six countries then teamed up for what was the world’s first international air and sea rescue
effort. It involved 18 ships and 21 planes with the Soviet icebreaker Krasin having a key part to play in the rescue.
