In Mali, the military junta has released nine politicians who were arrested during the coup on the night of March 21st . Five of the nine were Ministers in the government of the overthrown President Amadou Toumani Toure.
On Thursday, the Malian National Assembly Speaker, Dion Kunda Traore, was appointed as acting President.
He is due to hold presidential elections in the next 40 days. The military staged the coup due to their discontent with the previous authorities’ inability to deal with the Touareg separatists’ rebellion in the north of the country. However, the Touareg tribes have captured all major cities in the north of Mali since the military came to power.
