The trial of those suspected of alleged involvement in the Port Said football riot in February this year is due to begin in Cairo today.

75 people, involving 9 security service chiefs, are in the dock. A massive fight between fans erupted at the stadium of Port Said, north of Cairo, following a game of football between the local Al-Masry club and the Al-Ahly team from Cairo. 74 people died, while more than 250 others were injured in the stampede.

The tragedy prompted mass-scale protests in Egypt urging the government to bring the perpetrators to justice. According to investigators, the unrest had been deliberately provoked by extremists in order to destabilize the situation in Egypt.
