Prominent Russian conductor Valery Gergiev became an honorary member of the Viennese Music Association on Sunday.
An award ceremony was held at the Vienna Konzerthaus, where the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Gergiev performed a spate of musical pieces by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Igor Stravinsky.
Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Gergiev said that he perceives his being awarded honorary membership in the Viennese Music Association as a sign of respect for Russian music.
