Initial reports said about 10 people were injured in the quake, one seriously, and that most of them were tourists, Xinhua says. Some houses had also collapsed in a village close to the epicenter, which was in a mountainous area along the border of the region's Hejing and Xinyuan counties.
The earthquake was felt strongly by residents living in Urumqi, the regional capital of Xinjiang, who reported that cable TV signals were impaired and roads clogged by landslides.
