Syrian government troops have launched a successful counter-attack on militants in Aleppo, the country’s second largest city.

To check the advance of armed opposition reinforcements on Aleppo, government forces had to use air strikes.

There have been reports of continuing clashes on the southern outskirts of Damascus.
