UN envoy underscores gov't role in efforts to end Syria conflict
The Syrian government is the main initiator of the political process in the country. In a televised interview on Saturday UN and Arab League envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi said he was foursquare behind Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s call on all conflicting sides in Syria to maintain a ceasefire.
Brahimi said that ending the violence was the main priority and underscored the role of the Syrian government which he said was better than anyone else aware of the situation at hand and the sufferings the Syrian people was going through. He also made it clear that foreign military interference into the ongoing conflict in Syria was not an option.
On September 8 Lakhdar Brahimi will go to Damascus to coordinate the work done there by UN specialists.
