The last two days have witnessed a sharp increase in reports from Afghanistan. On Tuesday, the Taliban declared its readiness to start direct peace talks with the U.S. in the Qatari capital Doha. Afghan President Hamid Karzai first welcomed the news, but then demanded that the talks be moved "immediately" to Afghan soil. Since the demand is virtually impossible to be met, neither the U.S. nor the Taliban have shown any desire to fulfill it, and on Wednesday Karzai announced that he is suspending the talks with the U.S. over a security agreement that would regulate the presence of U.S. troops there beyond 2014.
