Currently the troops are conducting street by street sweeps and clearing any pockets of resistance so that civilians may return to their homes.
For three weeks, the city was in the hands of the extremist group "Victorious Front” which is associated with "al-Qaeda." They turned the town into a base of operations from where they launched attacks while using the civilian population as human shields.
