US Senate committee votes to provide weapons to Syrian rebels
Street fighting broke out Wednesday after supporters of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood dismantled tents set up by opposition activists outside the presidential palace in Cairo's eastern district of Heliopolis. Six people were killed in ensuing violence.
Opposition groups headed by Mohammed ElBaradei and Amr Moussa have accused Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood of instigating the violence, which bears resemblance to attacks on demonstrators by regime supporters during the popular uprising that forced Hosny Mubarak to resign.
Around 440 people were injured in the overnight violence, according to the Health Ministry.
Troops from the elite Republican Guards were Thursday sent to secure the state TV building in central Cairo, the state-run newspaper Al Ahram reported online.
