According to the American media, the amount was much less than originally anticipated by authorities of the disaster-affected states. New York, New Jersey and Connecticut hoped to receive from the federal government a total of about $ 82 billion. However, the governors welcomed this move of the presidential administration, and urged legislators to speedily approve the request.

"This money will allow for restoration work. We are ready to work with the administration and Congress, if additional funds are required for eliminating the consequences of "Sandy," says a joint statement by the states of New Jersey and New York, that shouldered the brunt of the calamity.

The two states plan to spend the financial aid not only for dealing with the hurricane fallout, but also to modernize infrastructure to avoid future devastating effects of natural disasters.
