The tale tells the story of a candle that for a long time had been unaware of its beauty until it was lit.
Experts believe that Andersen wrote “The Tallow Candle”, seen as his first fairytale, in the 1820s, while a schoolboy.
The Odense manuscript is not the original text but a copy that was probably made by the family to whom it was dedicated.
Andersen left behind hundreds of fairytales, including “The Snow Queen”, “The Little Mermaid”, “The Ugly Duckling” and “The Tinderbox”.
