The discovery of the Higgs boson largely reminds of the discovery of the Periodic System by Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleev. Nuclear physics also has its own Standard Model that outlines the world of elementary particles and their interaction, says Dr. Vladimir Erokhin.
“The Standard Model is a structure that consists of a certain number of elements, without which it cannot stand. If the Higgs boson were not discovered, the structure would have remained under question. Theoretically, everything fits well together. This is the reason why very few expected that this particle might not exist. It is a key stone in the theory,” Vladimir Erokhin said.
We have got used to the fact that all we have to do is enter new elements into the cells of the periodic table. But very few people know that the Standard Model works in a similar way. If physicists have finally discovered the Higgs boson, this means theoretical physicists have correctly formulated everything. This is the reason why scientists were so happy when the particle was discovered.
This discovery not only introduces a missing link, but also outlines new trends in science, Vladimir Erokhin added.
“The Higgs boson is in essence the last brick in the Fundamental Interaction Theory. This is an important result. The fact that the theory correctly describes the majority of phenomena that we come across has already been more or less proven. The question that we all are interested in now is what is beyond this theory,” Vladimir Erokhin emphasized.
The discoveries by scientists can easily be applied to everyday life, says Dr. Oleg Dalkarov.
“All people on Earth differ from each other in one way or another. People have different skin colour and other characteristics, but as a whole they are humans who have a particular genotype. It is common for all, if creates a unique scalar field that interacts with any person regardless of race or other group characteristics. We all have similar characteristics because we are all human,” Oleg Dalkarov said.
Another important aspect is that the discovery of the Higgs boson has become an important event for the Large Hadron Collider. In fact, it was built particularly to look for the Higgs boson which is often referred to as the “God particle”. However, there is no evidence yet that the discovered particle is for sure the Higgs boson.
But even if the discovered particle is proved to be not the “God particle”, scientists will not despair. The discovery will mean that they will have to develop new theories and conduct new experiments.
