On Friday, he will have an operation in Moscow. “Doctors fear for his eyesight,” Bolshoi’s manager Anatoly Iksanov has told reporters.
Mr. Iksanov said the Bolshoi Theatre’s board of trustees would cover the costs of his transportation to Belgium and medical treatment.
The reason for the attack remains unknown. A team of investigators, criminologists and sinologists were working at the scene since the small hours. The incident is being probed into for premeditated bodily harm.
The main version under investigation is an in-fighting among Bolshoi performers, a police source said, adding more trivial reasons hadn’t been ruled out.
The cream of medical experts has been invited to consult Bolshoi Theatre Artistic Director Sergei Filin, who was hospitalized with third-degree burns on his face and corneas after an unknown assailant attacked him with acid near his home on Thursday.
Police are conducting an inquiry in connection with premeditated bodily harm.
Investigators are considering several motives, including those linked to Filin’s professional activity.
A masked man has splashed acid at the artistic director of the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, police report.
Sergei Filin, a former dancer and director of Russia’s famous ballet company, was assaulted today as he stepped out of the car outside his house.
The attacker threw acid onto Filin’s face causing severe burns and fled. He is now being searched for by Moscow police who say a criminal case has been initiated on charges of “intentionally inflicting severe bodily harm.”
Bolshoi Theatre’s spokeswoman Yekaterina Novikova told reporters Sergei Filin had received threats before. The tires of his car had several times been punctured and his web page hacked, she explained. There is no information on the cause of the attack.
The 42-year-old has been ferried to a downtown clinic. His condition has been deemed as satisfactory.
Sergei Filin is a renowned Russian ballet dancer. He performed the part of Prince Desire in The Sleeping Beauty, Siegfried in Swan Lake, the Prince in The Nutcracker, Romeo in Romeo and Juliette, Classical Dancer in The Bright Stream.
Mr. Filin toured prestigious venues and danced as a solo performer with the English National Ballet, the Hungarian National Ballet and the Tokyo Ballet.
In March 2011, he was appointed artistic director with Bolshoi Theatre’s ballet company.
