They accuse the country’s Shiite government of discriminating and marginalizing the Sunnis.
The demonstrators have blocked the main highway leading to Jordan and arranged a traditional Friday prayer at the site.
Some media report that Al Qaeda has supported the protests and called for armed resistance.
Iraq has been seeing protests by the Sunni minority since December 2012.
