27 years ago, the International Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling but made an exception for small minorities of the North, who traditionally engage in the so-called ‘aboriginal hunting for whales’.

A number of whale protection projects are currently in effect on the territory of Russia.

Whale species protection programs pursued by Gazprom, the Russian Geographic Society, and companies engaged in offshore oil drilling, aim to protect the endangered whale species, including the humpback and white whales.

There are currently more than 100 known species of sea mammals in the world.
