Latvia mulls foreign adoption restrictions

Possible restrictions on foreign adoptions from Latvia may be debated in the country’s parliament in the near future.

According to the Latvian welfare ministry, a total of 144 Latvian children were adopted by American, Italian and French couples in 2012. In 2011, the number of adoptions stood at 128 children.

Meanwhile, home adoptions dropped to 110 in 2012 compared to 128 in 2011. Latvian MPs stressed the country gave up for foreign adoption children with serious conditions, kids over 9 years old and siblings starting at three kids.

A total of 150 to 300 thousand Latvian children found a new home abroad over the past decade, demographers say.
