After many months of fierce fighting with armed terrorists, Syrian government forces have regained control of the strategic city of al-Qusayr, cutting the rebels from support in arms and manpower that reached them from neighbouring Lebanon. Syrian Brigadier General Muhammed Issa told to the Voice of Russia, that government offensive in the Qusayr area was backed by a popular militia.

For Russia and NATO the conference is a new attempt to find the common language on security issues. The disagreement on anti-ballistic missile system, as well as such issues as international terrorism, drug trafficking, spread of weapons of mass destruction, the economic crisis, piracy, climate change and many other factors – all this defines the situation in the modern world making the leading military powers look for new approaches of ensuring global security.

A powerful earthquake has struck off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East, briefly triggering a tsunami warning. The epicenter of the quake, which the US Geological Survey said was of magnitude 8.3, was in the Sea of Okhotsk, around 600 kilometers under the sea. The quake was so powerful, that tremors were felt some 7 thousand kilometers to the west in the capital Moscow.
