The attacks occurred in Gvoza, a town near the border with Cameroon.

The gunmen opened fire on police killing three people and then attacked a local bank killing five others.

While none of the extremist organizations operating in the area have claimed responsibility for the incident the authorities believe the attack may have been the work of the Islamist group Boko Haram which seeks to establish Sharia Law in northern Nigeria, and regularly commits armed attacks and terrorist acts.
