US state department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Washington was did not want to “get in the middle of their internal discussions”, but added it certainly wanted “to see as many governments as possible provide appropriate support to the Syrian opposition coalition”.
Ms. Nuland said the US would back France and Britain in their move to support opposition forces to the extent Paris and London announced in their official statements.
The US spokeswoman noted however that Washington was intent to give the opposition only “non-lethal” help.
On Thursday, French President Francois Hollande said he was going to push EU member states to lift embargo to supply Syrian rebels.
