At least 13 hurt in Makhachkala bombing - update
The Jamaran-2 destroyer, armed with guided missiles, is based at the Anzali port on the Caspian Sea about 150 miles northwest of Tehran.
The 1,400-ton vessel is armed with anti-ship and antiaircraft and antimissile missiles. She also boasts new type radar, modern-day communications systems and a helicopter pad.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran said during the ceremony of floating the destroyer that Iran’s presence in the Caspian Sea seeks to cement peace, friendship and cooperation in the region.
“The destroyer is there to meet those who want to jeopardize the security of surrounding nations,” Mr. Ahmadinejad said as he inaugurated the guided missile destroyer in the port city of Anzali.
The Jamaran-2 will join Iran‘s naval fleet in the sea in upcoming months after it concludes the final tests. The previous version of the Jamaran destroyer was launched in 2010 in the Persian Gulf.
