The legendary Lonely Planet guide books will be finally published in Russian. Russia’s largest Eksmo publishing house has obtained exclusive rights for the Russian version. Now Russian tourists can plan independent holidays with the help of Lonely Planet books joining English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese and Korean speaking travelers.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has included Para-Snowboard events in the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games. Para-Snowboard will thus debut as part of the Paralympic program. The Sochi Paralympic Games will take place from the 7th to the 16th of March 2014. The participants will contest 72 medals. The last Paralympic Winter Games were held in Vancouver in 2010.

The “Meteoric Rain” exhibition has opened in Yekaterinburg in the Ural Region. Nearly 5,000 meteorites fall on the ground every year. The Goba Meteorite that was found in Namibia - the largest of all – weighs approximately 66 tons. 125 meteorites have been discovered in Russia over the past 250 years.

Russia is going to build its first spaceport. It will be situated near the place where the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was born – the village of Klushino in the Smolensk region, 200 kms west of Moscow. The spaceport, which will be named after Gagarin, will be an analogue of Spaceport America in the US state of New Mexico.

Scientists from Irkutsk, Eastern Siberia, have created a material from industrial waste, suitable to replace wood and plastic in the construction sector. It has qualities similar to that of wood, but is superior to wood with regards to fire and heat resistance, as well as its resistance to cold. The new material is durable and is twice cheaper than wood.

This year, the youngest Russian national park ‘The Russian Arctic’ is planning to receive twice as many visitors as last year. The results of the first tourist season in this northernmost reserve in Eurasia were 11 Arctic cruises aboard 7 ships from three countries carrying 865 tourists from many parts of the world.

Tourism has turned out to be the only industry which has stood its ground in the world economic crisis and continues to develop successfully. Last year, the share of tourism in the international GDP was 5%. Russia, which is in the 13th place in the world tourist rating, is no exception in this respect.
