  • Bitcoin, the digital cryptocurrency, is starting to attract the attention of the US government. It seems that the American authorities would like to destroy the digital currency before it could become a widespread alternative to the US dollar.

  • David Cameron's woes are continuing this week with plans to legalize same-sex marriage to be debated in Parliament today and tomorrow. The issue is hugely divisive, not least within the Tory Party which seems to have been in open rebellion in the last couple of weeks over everything from the E.U. to the next election. And on Sunday 34 current and former local party chairmen delivered a letter to Downing Street opposing the policy as "flawed, un-Conservative and costing us dearly in votes and membership". Gay marriage is causing a heated row across the political and public spheres.

  • Eminent American philanthropist Susan Lehrman has been bestowed the exclusive Fulbright Award for her great personal contribution to US cultural diplomacy and first of all to furthering cultural relations with Russia. The award was presented by the One to World public organization.

  • The Cannes International Film Festival is in the headlines of the scandal column again. Two more robberies have occurred there. This time criminals have robbed two US producers of computers, jewellery and a large sum of money.

  • Days of Russian Culture in Latvia are opening in the building of the Large Guild in Riga today. Over 140 various events will take place in the capital city and others places of Latvia until the 7th of June. Among them are concerts of music and dance groups, theatrical performances, exhibitions, film shows, presentations and literary nights.
