No sanctions on Iran in January?

Despite the US pressing for new tough sanctions against Iran, no such talks are expected in the UN Security Council during the Chinese presidency in January.

China has dismissed more debates on sanctions toward Iran during its month holding the rotating presidency.

Chinese Ambassador to the UN Zhang Yesui announced that “this is not the right time or moment for sanctions” and that diplomats need “more time and patience” to try to bridge differences.

Iran has rejected the US-imposed deadline of the end of 2009 for accepting a UN-drafted proposal to ship its low-grade enriched uranium for further enrichment abroad to France and Russia.

The country has recently announced its plans to build 10 new uranium enrichment facilities. The country insists that it needs the nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
